This is my second time visiting Mutianyu, and it never disappoints. The autumn foliage made the climb absolutely magical—red and golden leaves framing every watchtower. We took the chairlift up (a bit scary but fun!) and the toboggan down, which is honestly the best part of the whole trip. The staff were friendly, the paths were clean, and even at midday the crowds weren't suffocating. A perfect day out. Five stars—would do it again in a heartbeat.
A bit overhyped in my opinion. The wall is impressive, sure, but the constant stream of tour groups made it feel like a Disneyland queue rather than a historical hike. The steps are uneven and steep in places—fine for me, but I saw elderly tourists really struggling with no handrails. The ticket price was reasonable, but the food options at the base were overpriced and mediocre. I guess I was expecting a more serene experience. Solid, but not mind-blowing.
Went with my family including two kids under 10, and it was a fantastic day out. The toboggan ride down the mountain was an absolute blast—my kids screamed with joy the whole way! The wall itself is incredibly well preserved in this section, and the watchtowers are fun to explore. We took the cable car up and walked about 2 km before coming back down. Plenty of shade spots to rest. Highly recommend for families, just bring plenty of water and snacks.
Good experience overall, but I've seen better-maintained sections of the Wall. The toilets near the entrance were pretty dirty, and a few of the souvenir vendors were quite pushy. That said, the scenery is breathtaking and the crowds were manageable (went on a Tuesday). I'd recommend it if you're in Beijing, but maybe lower your expectations for the facilities. Three stars because the trek itself is amazing, but the tourist infrastructure is lacking.
Absolutely stunning! We arrived early (7:30 AM) and practically had the wall to ourselves until about 9:30. The restored sections are super clean and easy to walk, but the wild unrestored parts are where the real magic is. My legs are still sore two days later from all the stairs, but every drop of sweat was worth it for those panoramic views. The cable car ride up was smooth and gave a great bird's-eye perspective. Definitely a highlight of our China trip!
Decent day trip from Beijing, but the ticket + cable car + shuttle bus adds up quickly — ended up spending about 260 yuan per person without even buying food. The wall is beautiful, no doubt, but I’ve seen equally stunning sections for less hassle elsewhere. If you’re on a tight budget, maybe pick one spot and skip the extras. Glad I went, but wouldn’t do it again.
If you’re looking for a workout with a view, this is your spot. I did the full loop from tower 1 to tower 20 and back — took almost 4 hours with breaks. The unrestored section toward the end is crumbling and narrow, which adds a cool sense of adventure. Bring good shoes and a hat. No regrets, my legs are sore but my soul is full.
I had high hopes after hearing Mutianyu is less touristy, but honestly it felt like a theme park. The endless souvenir stalls, the hawkers shouting, the constant selfie sticks in your face — it killed the vibe. Also, the toilet near the entrance was absolutely disgusting. The wall itself is impressive, but the experience was soured by the commercial chaos. Sorry, not my thing.
Solid experience overall, but I’d recommend going early or late. We arrived around 11am and it was packed. The toboggan ride down is fun but felt a bit overpriced for the 2 minutes it lasts. The wall itself is well restored here, not as crowded as Badaling, but I wish there were more shade spots to rest. Still a great hike if you have decent fitness.
I went on a Tuesday morning hoping to beat the crowds, and it worked perfectly. The cable car was quick, and the wall itself was almost empty near the eastern watchtowers. The steep steps near the end got my heart pumping, but the views over the forested hills were absolutely worth it. Grab a water bottle before you start climbing — the vendors at the top charge double.
