Loved the contrast between the modern cable car experience and the ancient Buddhist atmosphere. The ride offers fantastic views of Lantau Island and the airport runway. The Big Buddha is serene and majestic, and we enjoyed walking the 268 steps to get close. The vegetarian lunch at the monastery was simple but delicious. Only gave it 4 stars because the Ngong Ping Village felt very touristy and crowded. Still, a must-see!

Honestly, it was a bit of a letdown. We came on a hazy day and could barely see the Buddha from the cable car. The statue is big, sure, but the whole place felt overly commercial with overpriced souvenir shops and mediocre food. The queue to get down was chaotic and poorly managed. For the time and money (cable car tickets are steep), I'd rather spend the day elsewhere. Might be better on a clear day, but I was disappointed.

Went for the crystal cabin (glass bottom) and it was exhilarating! Seeing the trees and water far below while gliding over the hills is a memory I won't forget. The Big Buddha is massive and photogenic, but the real star is the cable car ride itself. The village at the top is a bit kitschy, but the temple area is peaceful. Highly recommend springing for the crystal cabin if you're not scared of heights.

I've been here a few times with visiting friends, and it's always a solid experience. The cable car is fun, though the standard cabin gets a bit hot in summer. The Buddha itself is impressive, and the surrounding temple complex has nice gardens. The only downside is the long queue for the return cable car—we waited almost an hour. Still, a great day out, just plan for crowds.

Absolutely blown away by the scale of the Big Buddha. The Ngong Ping 360 cable car ride up was smooth and offered stunning panoramic views of the mountains and the airport. Once at the top, the serenity of the statue was incredible—even with a fair number of tourists. Definitely worth the trip from Central; allow at least half a day. A spiritual and visual highlight of Hong Kong!

Tian Tan Buddha & Ngong Ping 360 Travel FAQ

Can I visit the Buddha without taking the cable car?
Yes, you can take bus 23 from Tung Chung. But the bus ride is winding and takes 50 minutes. Plus, you miss the incredible aerial views. I rarely recommend it unless you're terrified of heights or on a tight budget.
How much time should I spend at Ngong Ping Village and the Buddha combined?
Most people spend 2 to 3 hours. If you include a meal and the Wisdom Path, plan for 4 hours. I've had rushed visitors who did it in 1.5 hours, but they missed the quiet moments.
Is the Crystal Cabin worth the extra cost? I'm afraid of heights.
If you're nervous, skip the Crystal Cabin. The standard cabin already has great views, and you can stand near the window. The glass floor might trigger vertigo. I've seen grown adults sit down and refuse to move. Not worth it.
Can I walk from the Buddha to other parts of Lantau?
There's a hiking trail (Lantau Trail) that passes by the Buddha. You could walk to Tai O fishing village (about 2 hours one way). But that's a serious hike – not a stroll. Bring proper gear and a map.
Are there luggage storage facilities at the cable car terminal?
Yes, at Tung Chung terminal. Lockers cost HK$10-20 per hour. Ngong Ping Village also has limited lockers, but they fill up fast. Leave your big bags at your hotel if possible.
How long is the Ngong Ping 360 cable car ride?
The ride takes approximately 25 minutes one way. The total trip if returning by cable car is about 50 minutes of riding, plus queue times.
Is the Ngong Ping 360 worth the price?
Absolutely, if you buy online and go at the right time. The views are spectacular and it's the most efficient way to reach the Big Buddha. Compare the HKD 235 round-trip with a bus ride (HKD 18 each way) – you're paying for the experience, not just transport.
Can I bring luggage on the cable car?
Yes, but only small luggage (carry-on size). Suitcases larger than 30x40x50 cm are not allowed. There are lockers at Tung Chung terminal (HKD 10-20 per hour) if you need to store big bags.
How to avoid long queues at Ngong Ping 360 cable car?
Book online in advance, arrive before 10:00 AM on weekdays or around 2:00 PM on weekends (when the morning rush has cleared). Also, consider taking the bus up and cable car down – the down direction often has shorter queues in the afternoon.
Is the Ngong Ping 360 wheelchair accessible?
Yes, the cable car and both terminals are wheelchair accessible. The standard cabin can accommodate wheelchairs (one per cabin). However, the boarding platform has a gap – staff will assist. The Big Buddha requires climbing stairs, but there is a small accessible path around it.
