Stayed three nights in Datong mainly to see the grottoes and the Hanging Temple. Both attractions delivered, but the city's pollution was really bad during my visit—left my eyes stinging. Hotels are affordable and staff helpful, but the air quality seriously affects the overall experience.
Cycled around the old city walls—great way to spend an afternoon! The section near the Drum Tower has some charming tea houses and local snack stalls. The people are friendly even with my broken Mandarin. Felt authentic and peaceful, way better than the typical tourist trail.
Datong itself felt a bit underwhelming. The city center is dusty and under construction, and I found the food options limited. The Huayan Monastery was quiet and beautiful, but everything else seemed run-down. Not a terrible stop, but I wouldn't go out of my way again.
The Hanging Temple is as incredible as the photos suggest, but getting there was a bit chaotic. The local bus dropped us off way too far, and we had to haggle with a taxi driver. Once inside, though, the views and architecture make up for the hassle. Four stars because it's amazing but not super tourist-friendly.
Visited the Yungang Grottoes and was blown away by the sheer scale and detail of the carvings. The whole site is well maintained, and the audio guide adds a lot of context. Definitely a must-see for history lovers—totally worth the trip from Beijing.
