Quick Navigation
Overview & Quick Take
After living in Suzhou for years and guiding hundreds of travelers, I've learned one thing: choosing where to stay can make or break your trip. Most first-timers head straight to the old city, which is great—but there's more to Suzhou than canals and gardens. Let me walk you through each area with real honesty.
My quick verdict: If you're here for 1-2 days and want to be in the heart of classical Suzhou, stay near Pingjiang Road. For modern comforts and lake views, go to Jinji Lake area. And if you're on a budget without sacrificing character, Tongli ancient town is a steal.
Old City: Pingjiang Road & Guanqian Street
This is where most tourists picture Suzhou: narrow stone alleys, white-walled buildings, and canals lined with willow trees. It's also the most convenient base for sightseeing—most top gardens (Humble Administrator's Garden, Lion Grove) and Suzhou Museum are within walking distance.
Best Hotels in the Old City
| Hotel Name | Location | Price Range (per night) | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pan Pacific Suzhou | Near Guanqian Street | $120-200 | Business & couples |
| Suzhou Marriott Hotel | Shiquan Street | $100-180 | Families, Western amenities |
| Plum Garden Boutique Hotel | Pingjiang Road | $80-150 | Couples, culture lovers |
My personal recommendation: Plum Garden Boutique Hotel is a restored Ming-era complex with a tiny private garden. I've sent dozens of guests there and they all rave about the authentic atmosphere. But—fair warning—walls are thin, so if you're a light sleeper, bring earplugs.
Insider tip: Most hotels near Pingjiang Road don't have elevators. If you have heavy luggage, request a ground-floor room or pick a hotel with elevator. Also, street noise can be loud until midnight (night markets). Ask for a room facing the inner courtyard.
New City: Jinji Lake & Suzhou Industrial Park
If you want to see Suzhou's modern face—skyscrapers, The Gate of the Orient, and massive shopping malls—this is your area. It's also where you'll find the best international hotel chains and the city's only lakefront promenade.
Best Hotels near Jinji Lake
| Hotel Name | Location | Price Range (per night) | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| InterContinental Suzhou | Directly on Jinji Lake | $150-300 | Luxury, romantic |
| Holiday Inn Express Suzhou Industrial Park | Near Expo Center | $60-100 | Budget business, groups |
| Suzhou Jinji Lake Grand Hotel | Lake east shore | $90-140 | Families, views |
Why I sometimes send clients here: The lake at sunset is stunning. You can rent a bike and ride the 15-kilometer loop. However, you're far from the old city—a 30-40 minute taxi ride (about $8-12). If you only have two days, I wouldn't stay here unless you also want to visit the Suzhou Center mall.
Warning: The area is very spread out. Don't trust walking distances on maps—what looks like 10 minutes might be 25. Always use Didi (Chinese Uber) or the subway. The nearest metro station to InterContinental is Cultural Expo Center (Line 1), then a 10-minute walk.
Suzhou New District (Shishan Area)
This is the second-hand modern area, home to Suzhou's tallest building (Mountain View Tower) and some good-value hotels. It's quieter than both the old city and Jinji Lake, but still well-connected.
Recommended Hotels
- Mercure Suzhou Shishan – Around $70-100/night. Clean, modern, good English service. Close to Shishan Metro Station (Line 1).
- Hanting Hotel – Budget chain (about $30-50/night) if you're traveling on a shoestring. Basic but reliable.
Who should stay here? Anyone who needs quick access to Suzhou New District High-Speed Rail Station (about 15 minutes by taxi) or is attending an event at Suzhou International Expo. Not much to do in the evenings except local restaurants.
Water Town Stays: Tongli & Zhouzhuang
Many travelers ask if they should stay overnight in a water town. My answer: yes, if you want a magical evening after the day-trippers leave. But don't stay in Zhouzhuang—it's too touristy and expensive for what it is. Tongli is my go-to.
Tongli Ancient Town
- Where to stay: I like Tongli Shuiyun Homestay (around $60-90/night) – a family-run guesthouse with canal-view rooms. Book on Ctrip or directly via WeChat (they speak limited English but will use translate app).
- Getting there: Take subway Line 4 to Tongli Station, then a 5-minute taxi to the old town entrance. Avoid weekends if possible—crowded!

My experience: I once brought a group of photographers to Tongli at 5:30 AM. The streets were empty, mist rising from the canals. That's the real magic. If you stay overnight, wake up early and walk to Tuisi Garden before the buses arrive.
Budget vs. Luxury: How to Choose
Let me break it down with a quick comparison table:
| Type | Examples | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury | InterContinental, Pan Pacific | Views, service, pools | Price, often far from old city |
| Mid-range | Mercure, Holiday Inn Express | Good value, reliable | Location can be hit-or-miss |
| Budget / Hostel | Hanting, Suzhou Youth Hostel | Cheap, social | Noise, small rooms |
My honest opinion: For most travelers, a mid-range hotel in the old city gives the best experience. You get authentic vibes without breaking the bank. But if you're doing a business trip, go for Jinji Lake. And if you're solo backpacking, stay in a hostel near Pingjiang Road—the Suzhou Hiker Hostel is decent (around $15-20 for a dorm).
