What’s Inside (Quick Jump)
I’ve been guiding travelers to Leshan for over a decade. And every time, I see the same mistake: people follow the crowd, queue for hours, and leave thinking “that was it?”
Here’s the thing — the best Leshan itinerary isn’t about rushing. It’s about timing, knowing where to stand, and dodging the tour bus waves. Let me show you how I do it with my clients.
Why This Itinerary Works
Most visitors arrive between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. That’s when the queue to go down to the Buddha’s feet stretches to over an hour. Instead, we’ll hit the site at 3 p.m. — the light is golden, the crowds thin out, and you get the whole experience without feeling like canned fish.
The One-Day Plan: Step by Step
Morning: Arrive in Leshan & Local Market
Take the 8:00 a.m. bullet train from Chengdu East (Chengdudong) to Leshan — it’s just 46 minutes. Cost: around 54 RMB second class. From Leshan station, grab a Didi (about 20 RMB, 15 minutes) to Zhanggongqiao Morning Market . This isn’t a tourist spot — it’s where locals shop. Grab a bowl of dandan noodles at a random stall. I always stop at the one with the old lady wearing a floral apron — her chili oil is insane.
Afternoon: The Giant Buddha (3:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.)
Buy your Leshan Giant Buddha tickets in advance via a WeChat mini-program (search “乐山大佛” or use a local friend). If you can’t read Chinese, ask your hotel to help — seriously, it’s a pain but worth it to skip the ticket line. On-site ticket booths often have a long queue even at off-peak. Adult ticket: 80 RMB, student/senior (60+): 40 RMB.
Enter through East Gate. Why? It’s where the taxi drivers drop locals — the main gate (South Gate) is a chaotic mess. Walk along the cliffside path and you’ll reach the head of the Buddha in about 10 minutes. Pro tip: Don’t stop at the head yet. Walk all the way down to the feet first — the descent stairs get congested as the afternoon wears on. Take your photos from the bottom looking up — it’s the iconic shot.
By 5:15 p.m., start climbing back up. The stairs are steep (about 250 steps). I always tell my clients to bring water and take breaks — I’ve seen too many people panting. Once up, you’ll get a side view of the Buddha from the Nine-Bend Plank Road — this is where you get the “Buddha in profile” shot without the crowds.
Evening: Night River Cruise & Dinner
After exiting, walk 15 minutes to Binshui Road where night cruise boats depart. A 30-minute cruise costs 70 RMB and gives you a majestic view of the illuminated Buddha. Book in advance through Trip.com or the official mini-program — same WeChat hassle but so worth it.
For dinner, head to Jiazi Road food strip. My go-to: Fangxing Restaurant for boiled fish with numbing peppercorns (you’ll sweat but love it). Address: No. 58 Jiazi Road. Average cost: 60-80 RMB per person. They have a picture menu, so no need to read Chinese. Cash or WeChat Pay — international credit cards don’t work here. I always carry at least 200 RMB cash just in case.
Tickets & Timing – My Cheat Sheet
| Ticket Type | Price (RMB) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Adult (Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area) | 80 | Includes the mountain entrance |
| Student (with valid ID) | 40 | Bring your passport if you’re a foreign student |
| Senior (60+, Chinese ID only) | 40 | Not applicable for foreigners – you need the adult ticket |
| Night Cruise | 70 | 30 minutes, departs every 30 minutes after sunset |
| Combined Ticket (Mountain + Cruise) | 130 | Buy at the East Gate ticket office before 4 p.m. |
Opening hours: 7:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. (last entry at 5:30 p.m.). Avoid national holidays like May 1st or October 1st when the site is swamped — the queue can hit 3 hours.
How to Get from Chengdu (Without Overpaying)
Do not book an organized day tour — they charge 400-500 RMB per person and rush you through. Instead, do it yourself:
- Bullet Train: Chengdu East → Leshan, from 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily. Ticket price 54 RMB. Book via 12306.cn (English interface available). Trip time: 46 minutes.
- Bus: From Chengdu Xinnanmen Bus Station to Leshan Bus Station, 2 hours, 35 RMB. Less comfortable but okay if trains are sold out.
- Taxi/Didi from Leshan Station: Use the Didi app (install before you go) — it’s about 20 RMB to the East Gate. Don’t take the scam taxis at the station who insist on 50 RMB. Just walk outside the parking lot and order a Didi.

Hidden Gems & Photo Tips
The “Secret” Path to the Head
Most people go up the Nine-Bend Plank Road and stop at the top. Instead, after climbing up, keep walking east along the cliff (away from the main exit). There’s a small pavilion called Lingjiu Ting — almost no one goes there. From that pavilion, you get a panoramic view of the river and the Buddha’s profile without any selfie sticks in your frame.
Best Time for Photos
3:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. The sun lights up the Buddha’s face from the left side. Avoid noon — harsh shadows make the Buddha look flat. Bring a wide-angle lens if you can — even a phone clip-on works.
What I Wish I Knew My First Time
The stone steps near the feet are uneven and worn. Wear grippy shoes — not flip-flops. I’ve seen three people slip on the damp stone (it’s always a bit wet from the river mist).
What to Eat in Leshan (Local Spots)
Leshan is known for boiled fish , tufei, and sweet steamed rolls . But here’s my personal list:
| Dish | Restaurant | Address | Price Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Boiled Fish (spicy) | Fangxing Restaurant | 58 Jiazi Road | 60-80 RMB per person | Picture menu, cash only, busy at 7 p.m. — wait 20 min |
| Qiaojiaogu Niu (beef offal soup) | Yang Laosan Branch | 15 Zhanggongqiao Street | 30-50 RMB per person | No English — point at what others are eating. Opens at 11 a.m. |
| Sweet Duck (Tianpiya) | Haoyuan Snack | Near Binshui Road, stall #12 | 25 RMB for half | Takeaway — best for a picnic on the riverbank |
