Gongbei – The Border Hub
Gongbei district sits right next to the Macau border crossing. It’s ideal if you plan to hop into Macau for a day or two, or if you arrive via the Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. The area is packed with mid-range and budget hotels, plus shopping malls like Lotte Plaza and Portas do Mundo.

Heads-up: Most hotels here accept WeChat Pay and Alipay, but bring some cash for taxis. Google Maps is unreliable – use Apple Maps or AMap Global (search "Gongbei Port" in Apple Maps). If you need to cross to Macau, the border opens at 7:00 AM and gets packed by 9:00 AM. I always tell my guests to go after 10:30 AM when the rush eases.
Insider Advice: Don’t book a room facing the main road near the border – it’s noisy all night. Request a higher floor facing the courtyard instead.
Hengqin – Theme Park Paradise
Hengqin Island is where Chimelong Ocean Kingdom (one of the largest aquariums in Asia) and Chimelong International Circus are located. If your main reason to visit Zhuhai is Chimelong, stay here to save commute time.

Xiangzhou – City Center & Dining
Xiangzhou is the original city center, near the famous Lover’s Road (Qinglu) seaside promenade and the Zhuhai Fisher Girl statue. This area offers a mix of business hotels, boutique hotels, and great local restaurants.
My personal pick: Jin Jiang Inn Xiangzhou (clean, affordable, good location) and Hyatt Regency Zhuhai (if you want luxury with a view). Walk along Qinglu in the evening – the sea breeze and illuminated landmarks are magical.
What to Watch Out For
- Payment: Many small restaurants in Xiangzhou only take WeChat/Alipay. I always carry 200 RMB in cash just in case.
- Transportation: Use Didi (DiDi app) or taxis. Uber doesn’t work. Show the driver the Chinese address: 香洲区情侣路。
- Wi-Fi: Most hotels have free Wi-Fi but it may block foreign websites. Connect your VPN before leaving home.
Doumen – Budget & Local Flavor
Doumen is a quieter, more suburban district southwest of the city center. If you’re on a tight budget or want to experience authentic local life without tourist crowds, this is your spot. The area has fewer highrises, more street food, and rice paddies.
Hotel recommendation: Vienna Hotel Doumen (clean, around 200-350 RMB/night). Downsides: limited English spoken, and you’ll need to take a 30-minute bus or taxi to reach major attractions. Bus routes 20 and 8 connect to Xiangzhou.
Why choose Doumen? If you have more than 3 days and want to explore rural Guangdong, it’s a great base. Check out the Doumen Old Street and pick up some preserved ginger.
How to Choose the Right Area
Ask yourself three questions:
- Do I plan to go to Macau? → Choose Gongbei.
- Is Chimelong Ocean Kingdom my priority? → Choose Hengqin.
- Do I want a mix of city attractions, dining, and relaxation? → Choose Xiangzhou.
If you have only 24 hours in Zhuhai, here’s a sample itinerary: Stay in Xiangzhou, visit Fisher Girl statue early morning, walk Qinglu, have lunch at a local seafood restaurant, then take a taxi to Chimelong for the afternoon (allow 30 min drive). Return for dinner in Gongbei to catch the night market.
Practical Tips for Booking in Zhuhai
Booking platforms: Use Trip.com or Klook – they accept international credit cards and show English reviews. Avoid Ctrip or Meituan if you can’t read Chinese.
Payment: Set up Alipay with your international card before you go. Most hotels require a deposit of 200–500 RMB in cash or card hold.
Navigation: Apple Maps works fairly well in Zhuhai. For walking directions, you can also use 百度翻译 (Baidu Translate) to show Chinese addresses to taxi drivers.
Language: In budget hotels, staff may not speak English. Download Google Translate or Apple Translate offline pack for Mandarin.
Chose a hotel in Hengqin because the article said it was the up-and-coming area. Honestly, it felt overhyped. The room was small for the price, the gym equipment was outdated, and the front desk staff seemed annoyed when I asked for extra towels. The area itself is still under construction — nothing interesting within walking distance. Maybe it's better for families going to Chimelong, but for solo travelers it's a letdown. Won't be back.
Good location (walking distance to shopping malls and restaurants) and the lobby looked fancy.
