Tips

Mix easily with Zhenbeitai in one day trip. Avoid the first days of major Chinese holidays when local tourists surge.

Reality Check

  • - Rock carvings and cave shrines line narrow canyon paths; can feel crowded in the middle of the day.
  • - Some paths are wet and slippery – wear non-slip shoes.
  • - The river inside the gorge gives a welcome cool breeze in summer.

Good, but not great for the price. The gorge itself is nice—colorful rock formations and a peaceful stream. But the entry ticket felt steep for what you actually get: you can see the main features in under an hour. The signs explaining the history were faded and hard to read. I'd say go if you're in the area, but don't go out of your way.

We visited with our two kids (ages 6 and 9). They loved running along the boardwalks and spotting tiny fish in the pools. However, I wish there were more shaded rest areas—we got pretty sunburned by noon. Also, the only food option was a pricey snack shack. Scenery is top-notch though.

A perfect half-day escape! The geology here is incredible—layer after layer of red sandstone carved by the river. I brought my sketchbook and spent hours just sitting near the main waterfall. Entrance fee is reasonable, and the staff at the ticket booth were friendly. Would recommend sturdy shoes; lots of stairs!

Hongshi Gorge is beautiful no doubt, but I felt it was a bit overhyped. The pathways are crowded even on a weekday, and some of the viewing platforms are tiny. Also, the water level was low when I visited, so the cascades weren't as dramatic as the photos suggest. Worth seeing, but manage expectations.

Absolutely stunning gorge! The red cliffs against the blue sky are a photographer's dream. We went early morning and had the place almost to ourselves—just the sound of water and birds. The walkways are well-maintained, and the views at every turn left me speechless. Definitely a highlight of our trip.

Hongshi Gorge (Red Stone Gorge) Travel FAQ

Is it safe to shop at Hongshi Gorge's markets?
Physically, yes, it's very safe. The main concern is overpaying for low-quality goods. Watch your belongings in crowded areas as you would anywhere. For transactions, cash is straightforward and avoids digital pitfalls if your mobile payment fails.
How much should I expect to pay for a decent souvenir?
For a meaningful, non-edible souvenir, budget between 50 and 150 RMB. This range will get you a good-quality paper-cutting, a well-carved stone item, or a set of hand-stitched crafts. Spending less than 30 often means a mass-produced item. Food items like jujubes are much cheaper, at 15-40 RMB per bag.
What's the biggest mistake tourists make when shopping here?
Buying the first "jade" item they see at the entrance. The stalls right by the ticket gates have the highest markups and the most generic stock. Walk further in, especially towards the exit path. Compare prices and quality between 3-4 stalls before deciding. The identical "hand-painted" scroll will often drop 30% in price just 50 meters away.
Can I get a tax refund (Tax Free) on my purchases?
Almost certainly not. The Tax Free Shopping scheme in China is typically available at large, designated department stores in major cities. The independent vendors at Hongshi Gorge do not participate in this system. Do not factor this into your purchasing decision.
Are the food products safe to eat?
The packaged, dry goods like jujubes, millet, and walnuts are generally safe. They are dried, sealed, and have a long shelf life. Avoid any unpackaged, wet, or freshly prepared snacks from unregulated stalls if you have a sensitive stomach. Stick to the vacuum-sealed bags for gifts.
Is Hongshi Gorge suitable for young children or visitors with limited mobility?
There are significant challenges. The main trails involve many steep, uneven stone staircases with low or no handrails in some sections. Strollers are impossible. The boat dock also requires navigating steps. For active kids who can walk steadily, it's fine, but you'll be carrying a toddler. For anyone with knee problems or mobility issues, the upper viewing platforms near the entrance are accessible, but you'll miss the best views down in the gorge itself.
What should I wear and bring for a day at Hongshi Gorge?
Sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes are non-negotiable—the stone steps are worn smooth and can be slippery. The north Shaanxi climate is dry and sunny; a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are essential. Bring water, as vendors inside are limited. A lightweight jacket is wise as it can be windy and cooler down by the water. Don't forget your camera and a power bank.
Are there food options at or near Hongshi Gorge?
Inside the scenic area, you'll find only small kiosks selling water, snacks, and instant noodles. For a proper meal, you need to go back towards Yulin city. Near the parking lot exit, there are a few simple local restaurants serving northern Shaanxi fare like lamb soup and noodles. My recommendation is to eat a late lunch in Yulin city after your visit, where options are vast and better.
How does Hongshi Gorge compare to other gorges in China, like the Three Gorges or Tiger Leaping Gorge?
It's a completely different experience. Hongshi Gorge is not about towering, forested mountains or raging rapids. Its magic lies in its intimate scale, its surreal and sculptural red sandstone geology, and its unique historical blend of natural wonder and ancient human inscription (the grottoes and carvings). It's more of a geological and historical art gallery than a wilderness trekking destination. Think of it as a specialized, visually stunning niche rather than a broad-spectrum natural spectacle.
Can I visit Hongshi Gorge and the Yulin Ancient City Wall in one day?
Absolutely, and that's the ideal one-day Yulin itinerary. Visit Hongshi Gorge in the afternoon for the best light (arrive around 2 PM). Spend 2.5-3 hours there. Then take a taxi back to Yulin city center (30 mins). As the evening sets in, head to the South Gate section of the Ancient City Wall. Walking the wall at dusk, with the city lights coming on, is a perfect way to end the day. The two sites showcase Yulin's dual identity: its natural ancient wonder and its human historical frontier.
