South Lake

The lake itself is pretty, but my visit was meh. The boat rental kiosk only took cash, which was annoying, and the paddle boat was pretty banged up. Half the food stalls were closed and the one open had soggy fries. There was also a lot of litter near the west shore. Maybe it's better on a clear day, but I expected more for a Sunday outing.

Nice spot for a long walk. I did two loops around the lake and the scenery is pleasant - lots of birds and a good mix of sun and shade. The only reason I'm not giving five stars is the path closer to the north entrance gets crowded with kids on scooters and bicycles after 4pm, so you need to dodge a bit. Otherwise a solid local park.

Took my parents here during fall and the foliage around South Lake was stunning. The paved path is flat enough for my mom's wheelchair, and there are plenty of rest areas with shade. We saw several families having picnics on the lawns. The restrooms were clean, which is rare! A lovely, peaceful afternoon. Will definitely come back in spring.

South Lake blew me away. We rented a pedal boat for an hour and drifted by the little island pagoda. The reflection of the trees and bridge on the water was perfect. There's a small tea stall near the east gate serving jasmine tea and these crispy fried cakes. Cheap, delicious, and the staff were super friendly. Honestly didn't want to leave.

We came on a weekday morning and basically had the whole shoreline path to ourselves. The water was so calm, with these big old willows dipping into it. I sat on a bench for half an hour just watching a heron fish. The wooden boardwalk around the reed beds is a hidden gem. If you need to clear your head, this is the place.

I’ve been to a lot of parks, but South Lake has a special calm. The way the light hits the water in late afternoon, the old stone pavilion, the gentle breeze—everything felt right. Didn’t need to spend money on the attractions; just walking the boardwalk was perfect. If you need a place to slow down, this is it.

South Lake is one of those places that looks better in person than in photos. We rented bikes and circled the lake in an hour and a half, stopping every five minutes to take pictures. The flower beds near the east gate were incredible. Very family-friendly, clean public restrooms, and the little cafe by the dock has good coffee. Highly recommend.

Came here at sunrise and it was absolutely magical. The water was glassy, the reeds were golden, and I saw two egrets and a kingfisher. Barely anyone around. The birdsong alone made the trip worth it. Easily the best part of my entire week.

Beautiful spot with a really relaxing loop around the water. The trees give you shade, and the mountain backdrop is stunning. Only reason I’m not giving 5 stars is because the pedal boats are way overpriced and the rental guy seemed annoyed when we asked to switch. Still, I’d come back for an evening walk.

I wanted to love South Lake, but it was packed when I went on a Sunday afternoon. The view from the bridge is nice, but there aren't enough trash cans and I saw plastic bottles floating near the shore. Also waited 20 minutes just to use the restroom. If you go early on a weekday it’s probably more peaceful, but for me it didn’t live up to the hype.
