Mission Hills Haikou

I only had one full day in Haikou and took a chance on Mission Hills. So glad I did. The film studio area started out as a touristy thing, but then I rented a 1940s-style dress for 50 RMB and walked down the cobblestone streets—it felt almost real. I stopped at the old candy counter, and the shopkeeper handed me a free hawthorn stick with a big smile. Later, I wandered through the flower meadow and watched a couple of film crews filming. It was unpretentious and fun, exactly what I needed. I'll remember this day for a long time.

Played the Blackstone course here and I'm still thinking about it. Mission Hills Haikou is a golfer's paradise. The volcanic bunkers and black lava rock walls come into view and you just want to stand there staring. It's tough but in an exciting way, not a ridiculous way. The rental clubs were in good shape and the marshal moved us along without rushing us. This was the highlight of my Hainan trip, no question. Already booked my next round for March.

Every pool was spotless, the lockers were easy to use, and the staff handed out fresh fruit tea as I was leaving. I honestly didn't want to leave. Would absolutely recommend this to anyone visiting Haikou.

A solid day out. We visited the Movie Town area rather than the golf course. '1942 Street' genuinely feels like old Shanghai—you can spend ages taking photos and poking into little shops. There's also a cool bridge and a section with old-timey cars. Why not 5 stars? The shuttle between the different areas is slow, and the signposts are only in Chinese. If you're on a holiday in Haikou and want something different, it's worth a visit. Just make sure you eat before because the food inside is overpriced and average.

I really wanted to love Mission Hills Haikou because the photos online looked amazing. We paid 340 RMB for the volcano springs and the scenery is genuinely pretty, especially around the tea pool. But the experience felt a little mismanaged—half of the towels were gone when we checked in, two main pools were closed for maintenance, and no one told us until after we'd paid. The water itself was nice and warm, and it's clean, but for that price I expected better service. It's an okay way to spend an afternoon, just not the five-star visit I was hoping for.

Came for a quick golf trip from Hong Kong and was blown away. Played three different courses in two days and each one had its own character. The Lava Fields course is visually spectacular — black lava rock contrasts with green fairways. The practice facility is massive and the pro shop has great gear. Only regret: didn't book a spa session. Already planning the return visit. Highly recommended for golf lovers.
