The night cruise on Two Rivers and Four Lakes in Guilin is visually stunning — all those bridges lit up, pagodas reflected in the water, and the huge Sun and Moon Pagodas are iconic. But the boat felt a bit rushed (only 90 minutes for ¥180) and the audio guide was boring. Nice for a one-time thing but I wouldn’t pay full price again.
Hiking the Longji Rice Terraces (Dragon’s Backbone) was the highlight of my whole China trip. The layered fields in the golden sunlight looked like something from a fantasy novel. I stayed overnight in a Yao village and had home-cooked bamboo rice — so simple yet so good. The hospitality was warm and genuine. Absolutely worth the muddy boots.
Went to Beihai for the seafood — big mistake. Bought some crabs and shrimp at the local market and had them cooked at a nearby stall. The shrimp were mushy and the crab tasted like old oil. Price was also way higher than what locals pay because of the tourist tax. Honestly, the only thing fresh was the disappointment. Maybe stick to street snacks elsewhere.
Qingxiu Mountain in Nanning is a nice escape from the city — lots of greenery, temples, and good views from the tower. But the entrance fee felt a bit steep for what it is (around ¥20 but then extra for the cable car). It was also pretty crowded on a Saturday. Still, a pleasant half-day trip if you’re in Nanning, just manage expectations.
Took the bamboo raft down the Li River in Yangshuo and it was absolutely breathtaking. The karst peaks rising out of the mist, the water so clear you can see the bottom — pure magic. Our guide even pointed out the “Nine Horse Hill” and told local legends. One of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. If you visit Guangxi, don’t skip this.
The Two Rivers and Four Lakes night cruise in Guilin was very scenic—pagodas lit up in gold and purple, bridges with colored lights, and the cool evening air. The boat was comfortable and the commentary was informative. That said, it felt a bit too polished, almost like a theme park version of a city. I'd have loved more local atmosphere and less laser show. Solid 4 stars for a one-time experience.
