How to Visit Huangguoshu Waterfall: Avoid Crowds & Save Money

I've been guiding tours to Huangguoshu Waterfall for over a decade. Most visitors make the same mistake: they show up at noon, bake in the sun, and spend half their time queuing. I'm here to change that. This guide covers everything you need – from getting there without a headache to scoring the best photo spots. No fluff, just real talk.Huangguoshu Waterfall tickets

How to Get to Huangguoshu Waterfall from Guiyang (or Anywhere)

Heads up: Most travelers start from Guiyang, the provincial capital. But if you're coming from Anshun city, you're even closer. I'll cover both.

Option 1: Direct Bus from Guiyang (Easiest & Cheapest)

Head to Guiyang Jinyang Bus Station. Buses depart roughly every hour from 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Buy your ticket at the counter or use Trip.com to book in advance. The ride takes about 2 hours and costs around 60 RMB. The bus drops you right at the scenic area entrance – super convenient.

Downside: Buses only run early; miss the last one and you'll need Plan B. Also, expect a bumpy ride – the roads wind through karst hills.

Option 2: High-Speed Train + Local Bus

Take a train from Guiyang North Station to Anshun West Station (about 30 minutes, 46.5 RMB). From Anshun West, exit and walk to the bus stop right outside. Take bus line No. 2 directly to Huangguoshu (45 minutes, 10 RMB). The bus runs every 20 minutes until 6 PM. Total time: about 1.5 hours. It's faster than the direct bus if you catch the train right.Huangguoshu Waterfall transportation

My tip: Take the 7:30 AM train from Guiyang. You'll arrive at the falls by 9:30, way before the crowds.

Option 3: Private Car or Taxi

From Guiyang city center, a taxi costs around 400-500 RMB (negotiate upfront). From Anshun, it's about 150 RMB. The drive takes 1.5 hours from Guiyang. Best for groups of 3-4. But remember – you'll have to pay for parking at the scenic area (10 RMB per hour).

Tickets & Reservations – Don't Show Up Empty-Handed

Ticket Type Price (RMB) Notes
Adult (Peak Season Mar-Nov) 160 Includes all three sections (Waterfall, Tianxingqiao, Duopotang)
Adult (Off-Peak Dec-Feb) 150 Same coverage, but water flow is lower
Children (6-18) 80 ID required
Seniors (60+ with ID) Free Chinese seniors only. Foreign seniors may need to ask at the gate.
Sightseeing Car (optional) 50 Covers the long distances between sections

You must reserve online. Use the official WeChat mini-program (search “黄果树景区”). Or book through Klook or Trip.com. Steps: scan the QR code at the entrance, select your date and time slot (morning or afternoon), and pay. Then show the QR code at the gate – no paper needed.best time to visit Huangguoshu Waterfall

⚠️ Warning: During Chinese holidays (May Day, October Golden Week), tickets sell out days in advance. Book at least 3 days ahead. I've seen families turned away – don't be them.

Best Time to Visit Huangguoshu Waterfall

This is where most guides get it wrong. They'll tell you “summer is best.” True, the water is massive in July-August after rains. But summer also means monsoon clouds and slippery stairs. Here's my honest take:

Seasonal Recommendation

  • June to October: Highest water volume – roaring falls. But prepare for rain and crowds. September is a sweet spot: decent flow and fewer tourists.
  • November to February: Water flow drops significantly. Still impressive, but you can walk right behind the waterfall without getting soaked. Less crowded. I personally enjoy winter visits – the mist freezes on trees, creating icy scenery.
  • March to May: Moderate flow, spring blossoms around. Good for photos.Huangguoshu Waterfall from Guiyang

Time of Day – The Golden Window

Arrive at the waterfall section between 3:30 PM and 4:30 PM. Why? The sunlight hits the water from the side, creating rainbows. Also, tour groups start leaving around 4 PM to catch their buses. You'll have the main viewing platform almost to yourself. I always tell my clients: “Skip the morning rush. Chill at Tianxingqiao first, then hit the falls late afternoon.”

One-Day Itinerary – Sticking to the Schedule

Assume you start from Guiyang at 7 AM. If you're already in Anshun, adjust accordingly.
Time Activity Details
7:00-7:30 Leave Guiyang Catch the 7:30 bus from Jinyang Station or train from Guiyang North.
9:00-9:30 Arrive & buy sightseeing car ticket Skip the car if you're fit – but the three sections are spread over 5 km. I usually buy the car ticket to save energy for the falls.
9:30-10:30 Visit Duopotang Waterfall The widest section. It's a 15-minute walk from the car stop. Less crowded early.
10:30-12:30 Tianxingqiao Scenic Area This part is a loop with caves, a natural bridge, and the famous “Silver Chain” fall. Allow 2 hours. It's the most physically demanding – lots of stairs.
12:30-13:30 Lunch Eat at the food court near the Tianxingqiao exit. Try the local “Huaxi beef noodles” – about 25 RMB a bowl. Cash or WeChat pay works. No English menu, but just point.
13:30-15:00 Take a break Sit at a café near the waterfall entrance. Or just rest on a bench. The main waterfall will be packed until 3:30.
15:15-16:45 Huangguoshu Waterfall (main section) Walk down the stairs to the base. Feel the mist. Then go behind the waterfall (Water Curtain Cave). Best photo spot: the small platform to the left of the cave exit.
17:00-17:30 Head back Take the sightseeing car to the exit. The last bus to Guiyang is at 18:00 (confirm at the bus station). If you miss it, grab a taxi to Anshun and then a train.

Insider Tips – Stuff Most Guides Won't Tell You

  • Rain poncho vs. umbrella: The mist from the waterfall will soak you. Ponchos are sold at the entrance for 10 RMB. Umbrellas are useless because the wind blows the mist sideways.
  • Wear non-slip shoes. The stone steps near the waterfall are perpetually wet. I've seen tourists slip in flip-flops. Hiking sandals or sneakers with grip are best.
  • Bring a waterproof bag for your phone/camera. Selfie sticks are banned inside the Water Curtain Cave – security will stop you.
  • The public restroom near the main waterfall is a nightmare. Use the one at the entrance of each section. They're cleaner.
  • If you have elderly or kids, skip Tianxingqiao. It's a 3 km walk with steep ups and downs. Do only Duopotang and the main falls. That's enough for a half day.Huangguoshu Waterfall itinerary

Where to Stay Near Huangguoshu Waterfall

If you don't want to rush back to Guiyang, consider staying overnight. Here are my top picks:

Hotel Location Price Range (RMB/night) Pros Cons
Huangguoshu Hotel Inside the scenic area, 200m from entrance 400-800 (peak) Closest to waterfall, quiet at night, breakfast included Rooms are basic, Wi-Fi spotty
Anshun Wyndham Grand Anshun city center, 40 min drive 350-600 5-star comfort, hot spring, good for families Need taxi to scenic area
Boutique Guesthouse “Shuiyun Jian” Near the ticket center 150-300 Cozy, English-speaking owner, luggage storage No elevator, thin walls

For backpackers: Try Huangguoshu Youth Hostel. Dorm beds from 60 RMB. Clean, social, but no breakfast. Address: next to the bus station – you can't miss it.Huangguoshu Waterfall tips

FAQ – Quick Answers to Common Questions

Can I visit Huangguoshu Waterfall in winter? Is it worth it?
Absolutely. The flow is lower but still impressive. The big advantage: almost no crowds. I took a group last February, and we had the main platform to ourselves. The mist sometimes freezes – looks magical. Just dress warmly; the spray is cold.
How much time do I need for the whole scenic area?
Plan at least 5-6 hours if you want to see all three sections without rushing. If you only do the main waterfall and Duopotang, 3 hours is enough. The sightseeing car saves about 30 minutes between stops.
Is there any place to store luggage?
Yes, at the main entrance there's a left-luggage office. 10 RMB per bag, security checked. Open 7:30 AM to 6:30 PM. I've used it several times – safe. But don't leave valuables.
Can I use my credit card or do I need cash?
Most ticket booths and shops accept WeChat Pay or Alipay. Credit cards (Visa/Mastercard) are rarely accepted – only at the big hotels. Bring around 200 RMB in cash for snacks, bus, and emergencies.
Are there English signs or audio guides?
Signs at the main waterfall have English. The other sections have minimal English. There's no audio guide rental. I recommend downloading an offline translation app. Or hire a private guide (around 300 RMB) – many speak English, but you need to book ahead via travel agencies.
What if it rains heavily? Is it still safe?
The scenic area may close the Water Curtain Cave during thunderstorms. Check the weather forecast. If heavy rain is forecasted, postpone your visit. The walkways are slippery but safe in moderate rain. Bring a poncho.
